Visiting Mu-Ryang-Sa Temple

In album

As part of our Buddhist studies, +Burt Lum and I joined Jodo Mission of Hawaii's Bishop Narashiba to visit the Mu-Ryang-Sa "Broken Ridge" Temple in Palolo Valley.

"Broken Ridge" refers to the abruptly clipped roofline, the name of the temple changed to "Mu-Ryang-Sa" after a years long legal fight over the height of the main hall. Legal challenges by neighbors and a compromise with the city led to the removal of several feet off the top of the structure.

First Time at Rajanee Thai Cuisine

In album

My wife loves Thai food. It's not my favorite. All those veggies and herbs? But after realizing that Phuket Thai is not the end-all, be-all of Thai restaurants (I admit I may have just gone in on an off night), and being introduced to Siam Garden on Nimitz Highway (thanks to my coworkers), Chiang Mai on S. King Street, and Champa Thai in Kailua, I realized I could still enjoy it.

Turns out there's a beloved Thai place in Mililani, tucked behind Jack In The Box and a dentist's office or two. Rajanee Thai Cuisine. And this cozy little spot turned out some great dishes!

Good thing we checked it out on a spontaneous date night (my brother took the kids out to a movie as a Christmas gift), as I don't think the kids would have gone for it. But we'll be back!

Making Mochi at Jodo Mission

In album

The annual New Year's mochi making at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii in Makiki. Trying to get to know all the steps, as the veteran mochi makers begin to retire. It's hard work, even with the machine doing the "pounding," but my youngest son was going strong after half a day of production.

Uber Launches Taxi Service in Honolulu

The proverbial gauntlet has been thrown. Uber, the disruptive transportation startup that landed in Honolulu earlier this year with its "black car" service (operating under state PUC licensing rules), has just flipped the switch on its taxi offering.

They're apparently partnering with local taxi company EcoCab, and offering competitive fares. And of course you get the convenience of summoning a ride with an app, tracking and sharing your car's progress, and paying and tipping without messing with cash.

If you're new to the service, save on your first ride with a promo code:

Hat tip, +Aaron Landry, who took what may have been the first Uber Taxi ride in Honolulu earlier tonight!

Guest Speaker at Jodo Mission

Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu of the Jodo Shu Research Institute in Tokyo was the guest speaker at today's Sunday Service at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii. He presented the sermon "The Meaning of Nembutsu in This Present Moment."

Following the service, the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions hosted a town hall meeting on the future of the Jodo Shu.

Jen got a job! And then another!

Hired. Twice over! A few weeks back my wife, +Jennifer Ozawa, got a gig at  +Macy's, the last company she worked for more than a decade ago. (She originally worked for Liberty House, which Macy's acquired.) It's a temporary holiday position, but it was a milestone for sure after years out of the workforce. They were glad to have a veteran back for the Christmas rush.

No sooner had she started work there, she got a call from +City Mill Co., Ltd.. She did well in the group interview, and thanks in part to my boss Faith's unbroken record in recommendations, she got hired there, too!

It's part time, but it's in Mililani, a quick walk from home. And this great local company still offers part-timers benefits, from medical and dental to discounts on things ranging from insurance to movie tickets. And frankly, Jen looks great in her red City Mill polo shirt.

It'll be a crazy couple of weeks as she juggles both jobs (her shift tonight at Macy's ends at 2 a.m.), but come 2014, she'll hopefully become a hardware expert and customer service star right here in our neighborhood!
