Startup Weekend Honolulu went down over a 54-hour jam session in Kakaako, in conjunction with other Startup Weekend events happening around the world. The goal? To pitch, design, code and launch a startup in less than three days. The event was hosted at The Greenhouse Innovation Hub on Auahi Street. On Friday, several ideas were proposed, teams were formed, and everyone got to work.

As a sci-tech geek dad, this is one of my favorite family events. All sorts of great science happens right here in Hawaii, and it's cool to see some of it (and the people doing it) in person. And if a mix of cool space stuff and hands-on activities isn't enough (including bottle rockets and dancing flame), there's always a great display from LEAHI (the LEGO Enthusiasts Association of Hawaii).

Google Drive is nice, but I don't like Google's new storage plan pricing

Right now, I pay a delicious $5 a year for 20GB of storage. Up until this morning, I could have paid $20 a year for 80GB. But now, Google wants to come after our cash every month, and the prices are much higher. For example, the nearest approximate storage amount up for me would be the new 100GB plan. But that's $5 a month, or $60 a year.

Honestly, the pricing isn't awful, but it's the monthly debits that annoy me. I guess I'm going to hold onto my $5 annual plan and just start deleting stuff.

The National Retail Federation has been running a nationwide "This Is Retail" video contest. And Tanna Dang of Honolulu's "Eden In Love" boutique has made the final five! What would she do with the prize?

"Take my staff on an appreciation trip and go somewhere where they will be able to help another community strive and grow in retail. My goal? Thailand or China. I would help a village perpetuate themselves by providing tools and training they need to sustain a healthy lifestyle."

He was the original "Famous Amos." But through financial and legal wrangling, he was essentially kept from being himself for years. Though he's found lots to do, from making low-fat muffins to helping kids learn to read, it looks like Wally Amos is ready to go back to the business that started it all.
